Cambridge University's Wilberforce Society Recommends VoiceMail4All

VoiceMail4All is a service available to homeless agencies across the UK and provided by St Mungo’s on behalf of Tech4all. Partner projects who subscribe to the service have the ability to offer free voicemail numbers to anyone who does not have a permanent place to stay and who does not have their own reliable telephone number. Clients can use the voicemail number to help find a job, hear from family and friends, keep in touch with support workers, or look for more permanent housing.

Each voicemail number comes with a freephone 0808 Message Retrieval Number, meaning clients can pick up their messages for FREE from any phone box or landline, any time of the day or night!

In its December 2011 paper, "Tackling Homelessness", Cambridge University's student think tank, The Wilberforce Society, recommended that "councils offer a voicemail service such as VoiceMail4All to the homeless in their area" as a relatively inexpensive way to help them overcome the barriers to finding a job and a home. VoiceMail4All is now available OUTSIDE LONDON, meaning we can now offer VoiceMail4All numbers with any UK prefix, such as 0113 or 01273. We launched the service in Leeds and Brighton in early 2010 and have since expanded to Wakefield, Medway and Bristol! To find out how you can get involved, click here.

VoiceMail4All Publishes Client Communication Needs Survey Results

In late 2011, 77 homeless people in London, Brighton, Bath and Bristol were questioned about how they communicate, who they communicate with and the barriers they face in communicating with others. Respondents represented every stage of homelessness, from street homelessness to being recently resettled.

Here are just some of the findings:

  • 62% of all respondents said having a VoiceMail4All number would benefit them
  • 57% of people with mobiles said VoiceMail4All would benefit them
  • 75% of job seekers felt they would benefit from VoiceMail4All
  • The survey also revealed that 21% of respondents with mobiles did not have access to voicemail on their mobile and almost 79% of respondents had lost a mobile phone at some time.
